Oxymorons

On my way back to the library at Luther Rice University after lunch today, I caught part of a sermon on the radio that had the following text for the sermon:

13For I have heard the slander of many, Terror is on every side; While they took
counsel together against me, They schemed to take away my life. 14But as for me,
I trust in You, O LORD, I say, "You are my God." 15My times are in Your hand;
Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
(Psalm 31:13-15)

The preacher rerferenced the “I trust in You” as a needed reminder for our country. This got me to thinking about the current economic crisis and the words of our President in his news conference last night, when he said that the federal government was the only institution that has the ability to help resolve the crisis our country is facing (click here for an entire transcript of his news conference statement).

It is absolutely true that we can’t depend on government alone to create jobs or
economic growth. That is and must be the role of the private sector. But at this
particular moment, with the private sector so weakened by this recession, the
federal government is the only entity left with the resources to jolt our
economy back into life. – President Barack Obama

I got wondering what it says about us as a nation. By definition, an oxymoron is a combination of contradictory or incongruous words. As I listened to the preacher on the radio, my mind thought of the ultimate oxymoron ….
